The mass manhunt for the gunman who fatally shot six people at a US Independence Day parade in a Chicago suburb has ended with the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect.
He was reportedly apprehended about 5 miles north of the Highland Park shooting site. Police have released a photo and name of the man they were looking for. This is Robert E Crimo III.
“The person of interest is being taken to the Highland Park Police Department, where we will begin the next phase of the investigation,” said Highland Park Police Chief Lou Jogmen.
The gunman opened fire from a rooftop at a point on the parade route where many residents had set up vantage points earlier in the day. Dozens of bullets sent people running for their lives, leaving a trail of abandoned objects.
“I remember seeing smoke on the ground, we were right where it all happened… I remember hearing gunshots, and a reloading sound, and people screaming and running,” said Ms. Garcia, one of the witnesses to the shooting.
“I thought it was the Navy that was saluting the flag with their rifles. But when I saw people running, I grabbed my son and started running…” another witness explained.
Dozens of people were injured. The ages range between 8 and 85 years; two people remain in the hospital in stable condition.
