TAfter the capture of the capital of Lugansk on Sunday, the battle for Donestk begins
Over the weekend, shelling in Kramatorsk left a trail of wreckage and destruction in what is the administrative center of Ukraine’s Luhansk region.
Russian Defense Minister, Serguéi Shoiguin his meeting on Monday with President Vladimir Putinofficially announced the victory after the capture of Lisichansk.
Russian television broadcast Putin’s response in order to control the Ukrainian Donbas: “The military units, including the Eastern group and the Western group, must carry out their tasks in accordance with the previously approved plans. I hope that everything will develop in that sense in the same way that happened so far in Lugansk.”
The governor of the Lugansk region explained that the decision to withdraw Ukrainian troops from the city of Lisichansk was made to avoid a “second Mariupol”. Serhiy Haidai assured that the Ukrainian forces prefer to deal with shelling and artillery attacks than to try to face a battle for the city on several fronts “Russia will not capture the Donetsk region quickly / in complete safety because while the Luhansk region held the line of the front, the Donetsk region was reinforced and fortifications and some defense lines were dug, so it will not be easy for them to break through.”
Russia claimed victory in Lysychansk on Sunday.
The Ukrainian army confirmed that its forces had withdrawn from the city, the last stronghold of the Ukrainian resistance in Luhansk, one of the two regions in the industrial heartland of eastern Donbas.
Russia also controls about half of Donetsk and they are now launching their offensive to take over all of Donbas.
