Minister Kuipers of Public Health has instructed the RIVM and the GGDs to prepare a new round of vaccinations against corona. In the autumn, vulnerable people will probably initially be offered a new repeat shot, Kuipers wrote to the House of Representatives.
The minister has already said that he is taking into account a new round of vaccinations if the virus flares up again after the summer. The GGDs are working on a plan to start with 300,000 injections per week, to be expanded to 1.5 million per week in six weeks. Such an upscaling is necessary if the repeat injection is not only offered to the vulnerable, but to the entire population.
No decision yet
Because the GGDs are having trouble finding sufficient staff in the current labor market, they want to start recruiting and selecting people now. That is why Kuipers is already ordering the campaign to be prepared, even if no decision has yet been taken to actually start the injection.
“I think it is very important that the implementation of a new round of vaccinations is ready in time to start vaccinating as soon as possible if necessary,” Kuipers told the House of Representatives. His budget had already taken into account a vaccination round in the autumn.
