Although the iron and steel complex of Azovstal en Mariúpol has been destroyed, steel production continues at another plant three hundred kilometers away.
The steel plant Kametstal it is now the largest in Ukraine. More than 9,000 people work here, many of them (about 500+) from Azovstal.
Dmytro Lyppadirector of the Kametstal plant, says: “Azovstal became a symbol of our country, of our fight against the enemy. I am proud to work for the Metinvest holding company, of which the Azovstal plant is a part. Following that example, we do our job and that helps us believe in the future. We believe in our victory“.
Despite the tense situation in the country, Kametstal produces several tons of steel every dayalthough the plant director acknowledges that it is not an easy task
“We are working on it, we are reducing production costs, but we are losing in competitiveness. We have three ovens on this floor, but unfortunately only one of them is working today. We have reduced the production of final products by 2/3. We are losing a lot of moneyLyppa explains.
Before the invasion, the steel produced in this complex was shipped by Black Sea. But now, they had to find new routes with cost consequences.
