Deadly avalanche in the Alps. There are at least six dead and nine injured by the detachment of a rock from the Marmolada glacier, the largest in the Italian Alps. Another 15 people are missing. There are probably foreigners among them, although the rescue services have not given details.
The authorities are still looking for victims and have evacuated the area in case new landslides occur.
Several helicopters have been deployed to help in the rescue operation and control the situation.
The collapse of the Marmolada is a consequence of the meteorological conditions. It has come a day after the temperature at the top of the glacier reached a record ten degrees. An episode of early heat due to global warming, according to experts.
The landslide has occurred near Punta Rocca, the usual ascent route for hikers.
According to testimonies, the piece of glacier split at two points, known as seracs, and generated a landslide almost three hundred meters wide of ice and stones that devastated everything in its path.
The recovered bodies have been transferred to the Canazei sports palace where they await their relatives accompanied by a team of psychologists.
