The impressive winning streak of Iga Swiatek came to an end on Saturday evening after 37 games. The Polish lost in the fourth round of Wimbledon in two sets to Alizé Cornet: 6-4 and 6-2.
Cornet, 32, only needed an hour and a half to beat Swiatek. The number one in the world lost no less than five cards in her service game and recorded 33 unnecessary mistakes, 25 more than Cornet.
The last defeat of 21-year-old Swiatek dates back to February, when the number one in the world lost to Jelena Ostapenko in the second round of the WTA tournament in Dubai. After that, Swiatek proved unapproachable at every tournament.
Due to her winning streak, Swiatek won the WTA 1000 tournaments in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome and the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart. She booked her biggest tournament victory at the beginning of June by winning Roland Garros for the second time.
Swiatek didn’t make a great impression at Wimbledon. In her first round match she lost only three games, but in the second round against lucky loser Lesley Pattinama-Kerkhove the Polish came out unscathed. She only beat the Dutch after three sets: 6-4, 4-6 and 6-3.
Cornet hopes to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in her career. The Frenchwoman joined the last eight at the Australian Open at the beginning of this year.
