Internazionale presented goalkeeper André Onana on Friday. The Cameroonian, who has been clear for some time that he would sign with the Italian top club, comes transfer-free from Ajax.
It is not clear how many seasons Onana will sign. Inter does there in a statement on its own site no announcements about this, although it is reportedly a contract until mid-2027. The 26-year-old Cameroonian is the first African goalkeeper ever to play for Inter.
It had been known for some time that Onana would leave Ajax on a free transfer. After difficult negotiations, the goalkeeper decided not to extend his expiring contract, which made him unpopular among Ajax fans. He was linked with a transfer to Inter months ago.
Onana was taken over by Ajax from FC Barcelona in 2015 and initially started with the promises, but conquered a basic place in the main squad in the 2016/2017 season. He has since been undisputed under the bar, until he tested positive for the banned substance furosemide in October 2020.
In February 2021, Onana was sentenced to a 12-month suspension, which was reduced to nine months. After his return, the thirty-time international played nine official matches for Ajax.
It is not certain that Onana will be Inter’s first goalkeeper next season. The Serie A club also has 37-year-old Samir Handanovic, who is under contract in Milan until mid-2023.
