Rotterdam wants to collect more eggs to prevent the nuisance of geese. The animals are an increasing nuisance. That said alderman Vincent Karremans in a debate about ‘goose terror’, requested by Liveable Rotterdam after a story about the increasing nuisance in the AD.
According to councilor Vanessa Bruin, it is very annoying for many people that bicycle paths are full of goose droppings. “Your scooter wheels are under it, you drive it into your house.” Other parties also called attention to it. “It prevents you from recreating, for example at the Kralingse Plas it is dirty,” said council member Ingrid van Wifferen (D66). “The gray goose in particular seems to be a notorious nuisance.”
Collect more eggs
Karremans corrected her: according to him the Egyptian goose is the biggest problem (‘without wanting to stigmatize, of course’). “This is not the biggest problem in Rotterdam, but it is annoying. We are not going to catch or kill geese, but we do do nest management: foresters are now collecting three thousand eggs a year. I will see if we can increase that.”
Karremans also wants to take more geese into account when renovating parks. “In this way you can ensure that they are less likely to reach footpaths. But they will not defecate less, no matter how many motions we submit here. They also do not adhere to the APV.”
‘Goose terror’
The Party for the Animals was not happy with the term ‘goose terror’. “Terror is organized violence to achieve a political goal: I don’t think that is the case with geese,” said councilor Ruud van der Velden. “But according to Leefbaar, the city is now not overrun by foreigners, but by yawning geese.” geese have just as much right to the city as man does: “They are just inhabitants of our city.”
