During the plenary session of the city council on June 28, reforms to the Regulations for Commerce, Industry and the Provision of Services in Zapopan were approved, through which, From now on, all restaurants, cafeterias and markets that offer food are obliged to give free water in a glass to customers.
The purpose of this is to prevent businesses from forcing diners to buy a bottle of waterincreasing the problem of plastic bottle garbage.
This was a proposal from the councilor of Futuro, Pedro Kumamoto: “Although today it is a common practice, the reality is that not all establishments are used to giving free non-bottled water to their guests when they request it. That in Zapopan we have the obligation within our regulations, it is a great step that must be recognized”
Kumamoto also said that hopes that by offering water in a glass, the consumption of plastic containers will be reduced
The mayor of Zapopan, Juan José Frangie, who we remember is the owner of some restaurants, spoke about it and said he was in favor of this measurealthough he argued that in Guadalajara and Zapopan most businesses give water from the jug to those who request it
“I am a restaurateur. Normally when they ask you for water, water is not denied to anyone. If you ask for water, it is usually given from the jug, from where you prepare the food (…) it is very rare that they deny it to you, huh”. she stated.
