The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series was initially intended as a film trilogy for which the script was already ready.
In an interview with The Direct told Stuart Beattie, a writer on the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, that he originally wrote a screenplay for three Obi-Wan films. He indicated that Disney and Ewan McGregor were all set for a trilogy.
“I wrote the movie the show is based on,” Beattie said. “I worked on it for a little over a year. After the Solo movie, Disney decided not to make any more spin-off movies, so I left the project and went on to do other things.”
“Executive producer Joby Harold then took my scripts and changed the scripts to the series. I didn’t work with them at all, but I did get credits because it was my job,” Beattie said.
Beattie first came to Lucasfilm with the idea for three films. He felt that Obi-Wan from Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith had to undergo multiple evolutions to become the character from A New Hope.
“The first movie became the show. It was about surrendering your will to the Force,” Beattie said. “The second was about where Kenobi needed to go. One of the most powerful moments in the entire Obi-Wan story is when he sacrifices himself in A New Hope.”
“Great moment, but if you stop and think about it, it’s kind of sudden. To just go and fight a man to see Luke and die. That required foresight for me. That required accepting beforehand that this was going to happen, Beattie explained.
Beattie didn’t say anything about his third film, but he was disappointed with Disney and Lucasfilm after they switched from movies to series.
“It definitely crushed us. Devastated, absolutely devastated,” he said. “That’s this work, highs and lows. I’m glad it was made. I’m glad the show was made. I’m proud of my story that was told.”
Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said that Star Wars is now going for lingering stories rather than movie trilogies. Series, standalone films, books, comics and games will further expand the Star Wars world. Trilogies are therefore really a thing of the past. Taika Waititi, director of Thor: Ragnarok, is already working on that. He indicated that he was working on a new story for Star Wars.
