Tim van Rijthoven caused a surprise in the second round of Wimbledon by eliminating Reilly Opelka. The Dutchman admitted with a wildcard defeated the fifteenth-seeded American in four sets: 6-4, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (7) and 7-6. Tallon Greek track was eliminated.
Van Rijthoven is thus continuing his impressive winning streak on grass. The 25-year-old tennis player won the Libéma Open in Rosmalen earlier this month to everyone’s surprise. It earned him a wildcard for Wimbledon, where he beat Argentinian Federico Delbonis in the first round.
Greek track got stuck in the second round. The Dutchman could not surprise the fifth seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz on Wednesday: 4-6, 6-7 (0) and 3-6.
Greek track had another great win against Fabio Fognini in the opening round on Monday. He defeated the Italian in four sets. Last year, the born Haarlemmer stranded in the first round with his debut at Wimbledon.
With the only nineteen-year-old Alcaraz, the six-year-old Greek track met one of the best-performing tennis players of this season. The number seven in the world has already won four tournaments this year, including two Masters tournaments.
Still, Greek track managed to make it very difficult for his opponent at times, although Alcaraz was just a bit sharper in the decisive moments. The Spaniard won the first set with a late break and was supreme a set later in the tiebreak.
In the third set, the number 53 in the world, Greece’s number 53, showed resilience by undoing a break behind. He then even missed two chances to post another break. Alcaraz struck a little later and did not relinquish that lead.
Of the three Dutch men who participate in the Wimbledon main tournament, Greece is only the first to be eliminated. Tim van Rijthoven (who currently plays against Reilly Opelka) and Botic van de Zandschulp are still in the tournament.
