The cabinet wants to receive underprivileged asylum seekers in a special location with stricter supervision, soberly furnished rooms and frequent room checks. State Secretary Eric van der Burg (Asylum) also wants to place refugees in immigration detention more often during their asylum procedure.
Van der Burg had promised to come up with new measures before the summer. Even before the recess – which starts at the end of next week – he will present a bill to declare asylum seekers who have exhausted their legal remedies undesirable.
The new reception center is intended for asylum seekers from safe countries and for people who have already been granted asylum elsewhere in the EU. Persons who have arrived in another EU country and who have to apply for asylum there will also be accommodated.
The State Secretary does not want “for foreign nationals to complicate an efficient processing of the asylum application by, for example, not appearing on the day that they have an asylum interview or a departure interview”. Therefore, the asylum seekers must be constantly available.
In the new reception centre, asylum seekers will receive resources in kind as much as possible. The minister is “concretely in discussions about a potential location, but informs the House of Representatives that the plans still need to be worked out further.
Nuisance causes are quickly identified
A trial is being launched at the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) to identify nuisance causes at an early stage. A special team will support locations where multiple incidents regularly occur.
The COA reported this week that a relatively small group is causing nuisance. The share of nuisance is large among Algerian, Tunisian and Moroccan asylum seekers. About a third of them were accused of this last year.
