President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called on the Mexican population to be attentive to the trial that will begin next October in New York against Genaro García Luna, former Secretary of Public Security in the six-year term of Felipe Calderón, for alleged links with drug trafficking, since he stated that “It is not going to be that they want to give him long”.
In press conference “morning” at the National Palace and when asking “Is nothing else going to be García Luna?”López Obrador questioned whether in this case only García Luna or other officials of that six-year term will be involved.
He pointed out that recent witness statements against García Luna involve former President Felipe Calderón and that part of the irregular money received by his Secretary of Public Security went to the former presidential residence of Los Pinos.
“Lately, testimonies of witnesses who have testified against García Luna have been coming out, but it involves Calderón, so how are they going to do him in that trial in the United States? That’s why I understand your concerns and the people who are involved there, who participated from all sectors (…) there are many questions, now all the very strong statements against him receiving money, but pointing out that part of that money went to Los Pinos, so how is the trial going to be?.
“Those who are attending the trial have to clarify, at least three things: one, if everything in the file is true, if the accusations are proven, that is, if the accusation is not fabricated. If they say ‘ it was fabricated’, ahh, and who was the one who ordered the fabrication of this accusation? Where did it come from? What agency? Who were responsible? (…) That is the first thing that has to happen in this matter, that is, let’s see Is there evidence or no evidence, and if the evidence is good, How far will the case go? Is nothing else going to be García Luna? That is why it is an interesting matter, and I repeat, if they set up the case, if there is no basis, in any case we must investigate and punish the one who, as it is said in the Bible, gave false testimony and if there is evidence, How far will it go? Are you going to stay there with García Luna? Was it just him or is she going to expand?”.
“That’s why you have to be aware, because the trial formally begins in October, but it’s not going to be that they want to drag you out”he indicated.
