The LGBTI+ population in Mexico amounts to five million people (5.1% of the population aged 15 and over)that is one out of every 20 citizens recognizes himself from that community.
This is revealed by the National Survey on Sexual and Gender Diversity (ENDISEG) 2021published this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
According to the survey, 95.2% of the population aged 15 and over (92.6 million people) identified as heterosexual and 4.8% (4.6 million) as LGB+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, demisexual, among others).
In the case of men, 4.2% identified with an LGBT+ sexual orientation. The percentage of women was 5.3%, while 0.9% (909 thousand people) identified as Trans+ (transgender, transsexual, non-binary, fluid gender, agender, among others).
The State of Mexico concentrates the largest volume of the LGBTI+ population, with 490 thousand people aged 15 and over; Mexico City follows, with 311 thousand people; while in third place is Veracruz, with 308 thousand people.
Of the five million people who identify as part of the LGBTI+ population, 67.5% are between 15 and 29 years old.
63% of the LGBTI+ population stated that they were single, 13.9% were married, and 16.7% stated that they lived in a free union.
Regarding economic activity, 64.3% of the LGBTI+ population identified themselves as economically active, and 35.7% as not economically active.
The National Survey on Sexual and Gender Diversity (ENDISEG) 2021 was carried out from August 23, 2021 to January 16, 2022, and applied in about 44 thousand homes throughout the country.
