British Prime Minister Boris Johnson He urged the G-7 on Saturday not to abandon Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion and promised new financial aid to kyiv.the eve of a summit of that club of the world’s largest economies.
“Ukraine can and will win. But it needs our support to do so. Now is not the time to abandon Ukraine,” Johnson said in a statement released just hours before the G-7 meeting in the German city of Elmau.
The United Kingdom is ready to provide a new aid package of 429 million pounds, in the form of credit guarantees, the statement added, warning that Ukraine could be deprived of liquidity in the autumn without new injections of money.
That sum will bring British financial backing to a total of $1.8 billion since the start of the Russian invasion four months ago.
Johnson, under internal pressure after the defeat of his Conservative party in two local legislative elections and the negative headlines about his performance, has maintained a firm position against Russia since the beginning of the war.
