Last Monday two Jesuit priests and a tourist guide were murdered in Cerocahui, Chihuahua, this fact has been attributed to José Noriel Portillo Gil, alias “el Chueco”, who directs a cell of the criminal group “New People”, considered the armed and operational arm of the Sinaloa Cartel in Chihuahua.
However, it is recognized by the Attorney General of the State of Chihuahua as the person responsible for other homicides, organized crime, in addition to the murder of the Jesuit priests, For this reason, the state authorities have offered a reward of up to 5 million pesos to those who provide information that leads to his capture.
Who is “El Chueco”?
José Noriel Portillo Gil, better known as “El Chueco”, born on May 12, 1992 in the community of Urique, is a criminal widely known to the state authorities of Chihuahua. It should be noted that he is linked to several high-impact crimes. Some of the crimes with which he is linked is that he is the main suspect in the murder of Patrick Braxton-Andrews, a professor from the United States. who would have been mistaken for a DEA agent.
In addition, he is involved in the attack against the State Investigation Agency in Urique, municipal seat of Cerocahui, Chihuahua, also in 2017.
In turn, he was involved in the seizure of 26 million pesos, long weapons, drugs and vehicles thatthat were seized in the municipality of Urique, in that same state.
It is related to illegal logging, in addition to drug trafficking; is designated as operator of Los Salazar in the Sierra Tarahumara, armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel, headed by the sons of El Chapo Guzmán. He is the leader of a criminal group called “New People” whose origins date back to 1995, when the so-called “El Profe” began his criminal career in Chihuahua under the so-called “Federation” of Sinaloa. “New People” from its beginnings to date has been the main source of organized crime in Ciudad Juárez, as well as in the rest of the state, where they have waged a war for several years with the Juárez Cartel and its executive wing, “La Línea”, for control of smuggling routes to the United States.
“El Chueco” has managed to evade the authorities
Despite the attempts made by state police to catch the leader of the strongest organized crime group in Ciudad Juárez, has managed to escape successfully on at least two occasionswhere even more than 30 elements of the State Attorney General’s Office went to his home to capture him, without success, since he was guarded by several gunmen.
Presumed murderer of Jesuits
Although the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office has not named “El Chueco” as likely responsible for the triple homicide, he is linked to the murder of the Jesuits Javier Campos Morales and Joaquín César Mora Salazar, in addition to Pedro Heliodoro Palma, tour guide.
The first indication that was attended to last Monday was the report informing them that José Noriel Portillo Gil, alias “El Chueco”, arrived at a home in Cerocahu, in order to locate Paul B., a resident of the community, since days before a baseball game had been held by a team sponsored by “El Chueco”.
Because the team supported by the subject lost, a dispute would have arisen with the other team and according to the versions of a witness, “El Chueco” He detonated a firearm and subsequently set fire to the house.
Hours later, a second event took place in a hotel in the town, where Pedro P., a well-known tour guide, interacted with “El Chueco” and was later deprived of his liberty.
“The statements collected by the ministerial authority indicate that the man previously deprived of his liberty escaped and arrived at the town’s temple, where he was helped by the religious, who unfortunately were deprived of their lives by a firearm projectile and whose bodies were the assailant carried. According to authorities.
As for the location of the bodies, the bodies of the victims were found in the area known as Pito Real, for which the identification protocols were applied. Finally, it was reported that the priority is the arrest of the alleged perpetrator and guaranteeing security in the area.
They repudiate crime
However, in the face of this fact, Pope Francis, who is also a member of the Jesuit order, expressed his “sadness” and “consternation” at the crime of the religious, who carried out their work in the Sierra Tarahumara.
“There are so many murders in Mexico. I am close, in affection and prayer, to the Catholic community affected by this tragedy,” he said.
For his part, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador lamented the events and confirmed that the military are already looking for the aggressor, recognized by a third priest who was in the temple.
