Create “stronger health systems in Latin America”, favor the production of vaccines locally and be better prepared against future pandemics. That is the objective of Team Europe, an initiative of the Government of Spain, to which Germany and Portugal have joined and which is supported by the European Commission. At the moment, it has 890 million euros of investment. The president of the Community Executive, Ursula von der Leyen, explained it during the presentation of the project in Brussels:
“We are currently defining our financial support for the biotech sector in Cuba and Mexico, and we are exploring support options in Chile, Costa Rica, Uruguay and Colombia.”
Spain is committed to incorporating health care into its relationship with Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting technology transfer and developing it locally. The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, pointed out that it is “vaccine technology focused on messenger RNA, adaptable and applicable to the future needs of the region.”
“In order to promote the production of vaccines and the resilience of health systems, we initially propose working on three axes. First, transferring technology and research, as the president of the (European) Commission said; second, exchanging experiences in matters of regulation, which is fundamental; and third, the mobilization of investments from the private sector in this region,” declared Sánchez.
Spain wanted to promote the Team Europe initiative after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, realizing that it was necessary to universalize vaccines.
