Plittle or no reference to Ukraine and much criticism of the West in the speech of Vladimir Putin at the virtual summit of the Emerging Economies Forum.
The Russian president advocated greater cooperation between the five economies so as to circumvent Western sanctions: “Only on the basis of honest and mutually beneficial cooperation can we seek solutions to the crisis situation that has developed in the world economy due to ill-conceived and selfish actions of some countries.”
But beyond immediate cooperation, Putin’s apparent objective would be to modify the world order to reposition Russia in a multipolar system that ends Western hegemony: “We are convinced that now, more than ever, the leadership of the countries BRICS is necessary to develop a unifying and positive path towards the formation of a truly multipolar system of intergovernmental relations.”
Chinese President, Xi Jinping, has criticized the sanctions imposed on Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. Xi referred to what he called “efforts by some countries to maintain their political and military power.”
Made up of Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil, the BRICS group brings together the most advanced countries among emerging economies.
Of these, only Brazil has imposed sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
