Iga Swiatek reached the eighth finals of Roland Garros on Saturday without playing great. The number one in the world settled in Paris with Danka Kovinic from Montenegro and booked her 31st victory in a row.
Twenty-year-old Swiatek has been unapproachable for months and initially also dominated against Kovinic, the number 95 in the world. She made many unnecessary mistakes (23) and gave up a 4-1 lead over Court Philippe-Chatrier in the second set, but still prevented a rare third set: 6-3 and 7-5.
Swiatek’s last defeat still dates back to February, when she was knocked out in the second round by Jelena Ostapenko at the WTA tournament in Dubai. After that, the unleashed Polish won the WTA 1000 tournaments in Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome and the WTA 500 tournament in Stuttgart.
Of her last 23 matches, Swiatek won 22 without losing a set. She has also been at a lonely height at Roland Garros so far. Earlier this tournament, the winner of 2020 did not miss the Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko (6-2 and 6-0) and the American Alison Riske (6-0 and 6-2).
In the fourth round, Swiatek is still not waiting for a duel with a seeded player. The global number one will compete against the French Alize Cornet or the Chinese Qinwen Zheng.
Last year, Swiatek stranded in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros due to a defeat against the Greek Maria Sakkari. The single Grand Slam winner reached the last four at the Australian Open earlier this year.
