A Salvadoran father and his seven-year-old son died trying to cross the Suchiate River from Guatemala to Mexico.border between the two countries, reported Mexican authorities.
“A 36-year-old man and his seven-year-old son, originally from El Salvador, lost their lives last Wednesday night in the Suchiate riverbed,” reported the National Migration Institute (INM).
The two migrants died in the waters of the Suchiate River while trying to cross it; the force of the water and the rain did not allow them.
“They advanced a few meters with the mother, when the strong currents of the river separated the minor from his father who was carrying him in his arms,” the INM commented.
When the father went in search of his son, both were swept away by the current, and their bodies were found the next day near El Chical, municipality of Tuxtla Chico, in Chiapas.
The Salvadoran wife and mother had to receive medical attention at the General Hospital of Tapachula, Chiapas, due to an emotional crisis.
The authorities pointed out that the Consulate of El Salvador made the arrangements for the repatriation of the bodies to be carried out this Tuesday and may be buried in their place of origin.
The region is experiencing a record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office detected more than 1.7 million undocumented immigrants on the border with Mexico in fiscal year 2021, which ended on September 30.
