Jüri Vips will compete for Red Bull Racing on Friday during the first free practice for the Spanish Grand Prix. The driver from Estonia takes over the seat from Sergio Pérez.
The 21-year-old VIPs has been part of Red Bull’s talent program for several years. He has since driven a top team car more often, such as at the end of last year during a test day in Abu Dhabi after the closing race of the season, but never during a Grand Prix weekend.
Vips is in his third season in Formula 2. He finished last year thanks to six podium places in sixth in the World Cup position of the second most important class in motorsport. He is currently eighth in the standings after six races.
“I am very happy to finally be able to share with you that I will be making my Formula 1 debut,” Vips wrote on Instagram. “I cannot put into words how grateful I am for the opportunity that Red Bull gives me.”
All Formula 1 teams are required to have a rookie tested twice a season. For example, Williams already announced this week that Nyck de Vries will take over the seat from Nicholas Latifi during the first free practice on Friday.
The first free practice for the Spanish Grand Prix starts on Friday at 2 p.m. The race will start one hour later on Sunday. Max Verstappen won the last two races and is still nineteen points behind Charles Leclerc in the World Cup position.
