Greek composer Vangelis, creator of soundtracks for films such as ‘Chariots of Fire’ and ‘Blade Runner’, has died. Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, known as Vangelis, died last Tuesday at the age of 79, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced on Thursday, although the causes of his death have not been specified.
Vangelis, born in 1943, was a prolific composer for many decades. He fused experimentation, Greek tradition and Orthodox Christian choral music, achieving an inimitable, highly personal style.
His electronic music creations for the Oscar-winning film “Chariots of Fire” make up one of the best-known soundtracks of the 1980s.
In his youth, after setting up several rock groups, he moved to Paris at the age of 25, joining an exodus of young artists who left Greece after the 1967 coup.
