Nearly 1,000 Ukrainian fighters who were holed up in the last resistance stronghold in Mariupol have surrendered, the Russian Defense Ministry says.
In the past 24 hours, 694 Ukrainian soldiers inside the Azovstal steel complex have surrendered, ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said Wednesday. With these, a total of 959 Ukrainian troops have left the plant this week.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported the day before that 265 Ukrainian soldiers, of whom 51 were wounded, had laid down their arms in the previous 24 hours.
The Ukrainian authorities have not confirmed the latest figures.
According to Konashenkov, 29 of the 694 soldiers who surrendered on the last day were wounded.
