The Kalush Orchestra had never traveled to Turin before it was close. The group initially came in second during Vidbir, the national song contest of Ukraine. The group received the maximum number of points from the public but came third with the judges and just came short to beat Alina Pash.
After the fuss, the Ukrainian Eurovision ticket went to Kalush Orchestra, which was confirmed two days before the Russian invasion. When the war started, the group quickly became a favorite.
