“Attention, there is an emergency in the park.” This was heard by the children who walked through a Belgian zoo yesterday morning. The reason: A bonobo had escaped.
It happened in Planckendael Zoo in Mechelen. All visitors, including some school classes, had to get somewhere inside or leave the park as quickly as possible. Bonobos can be quite dangerous.
The escaped bonobo is called Zamba. The animal ran loose through the zoo for a few hours. In the end, the caretakers tried to catch him in a clever way. They gave Zamba a banana with a sleeping aid in it.
The plan worked. When the sedative started working, the caretakers were able to capture Zamba and return him to his enclosure. At that time, all the children had already gone home.
Now everything is back to normal at the zoo. How the bonobo escaped is still under investigation. The children have been given tickets to come back soon.
