In order that the population is better represented at the time of voting in the elections, the National Electoral Institute (INE) carries out a national redistricting process in which each electoral district will have an average of 420,046 people, reported Lorenzo Córdova Vianello.
The president counselor of the INE explained that, as of the results of the 2020 Population and Housing Census, which has registered significant population movementsthe electoral authority is obliged to update the electoral cartography both at the federal and local levels.
He explained that, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), the country’s population was 126 million 014 thousand 024 inhabitants in that year. “By dividing this amount among the 300 electoral districts, the average population of each district will be 420 thousand 046 peoplewhich is the figure that is being used to calculate the new districting, without in any case a State having less than two districts”, indicated the president of the INE.
He argued that the objective of this update, “is that each council represents a similar number of inhabitants and consequently the population is better represented at the time of exercising their political-electoral rights.”
