Protest in Paris of police unions after the accusation of a colleague “for voluntary manslaughter”. They consider it “unacceptable” that “the presumption of legitimate defense” has not been taken into account and they ask for a “jurisdiction specialized in police matters”.
The so-called Pont Neuf case dates back to the night of Sunday, April 24, after Emmanuel Macron’s victory in the second round of the presidential elections. The accused agent fired an assault rifle at a car that had tried to evade a checkpoint, killing its driver and a passenger and injuring a third occupant.
The Magistracy Union has said in a statement that the reaction of the police unions is “almost systematic” every time they perceive a judicial decision as unfavorable. “Trying to oppose the police against the judges is in any case a dangerous game for the rule of law, by encouraging the distrust of the entire population against its Police and its Justice,” says the note.
In front of the police unions, in the same Saint Michel square in Paris, a counter-demonstration protested against police impunity, describing article L435-1, on the conditions of the use of police weapons, as a “weapon of mass destruction”.
