Last Friday on QUB radio, Brian Mulroney did not hesitate to condemn the invasion of Ukraine by Vladimir Putin. A “despicable and stupid” gesture. As for Putin, Mulroney designates him as a war criminal. Hard to be tougher.
Mulroney wants the allies to seek victory, not just a position of strength in negotiations with Russia.
And in his opinion, Ukraine should be sent all the weapons that this country asks for.
Mulroney’s wishes seem to have been granted.

Now, the United States and its allies are no longer just talking about containing the war on Ukraine. They want to break Russia’s back so that it never does what it is doing in Ukraine again.
Why ? Because Russia tried to annex a sovereign country. Because she tried to crush the nascent democracy in Ukraine. Because it has engaged in war crimes, from massacres of the population to the deportation of children, passing through the systematic bombardment of civilian installations.
But above all, because the Russian army has shown that it does not live up to its reputation. Because the Ukrainian army has shown that it could defeat the Russian army.
In other words, the war in Ukraine has changed its objectives and scope.
It is no longer simply a question of containing Russia in Ukraine and possibly driving it out.
It is a question of permanently weakening Russia by preventing it from strengthening its army, therefore preventing it from strengthening itself economically.
From now on, every month, the United States and its allies, in all 40 countries, will meet to decide on new measures of war against Russia.
It’s an escalation. Let’s hope that it will encourage Vladimir Putin to negotiate, or better, that he will be forced out of power.
For the moment, Putin responds in three ways to the new position of the Americans and their allies.
First, he reiterates his demand that NATO countries stop supplying arms to Ukraine. Obviously, the fewer weapons the Ukrainians have, the more the victory of the Russians will be assured. This request does not hold water. Here again Mulroney’s wishes seem on the way to being granted.
Secondly, Putin is threatening to use his atomic weapons. But against whom? If he does it against the Ukrainians, he will lose what little international support he has left. If he drops a bomb against a NATO country, it will be the start of a third world war.
Third, it can open new fronts. He juggles with the idea of going to war against Moldova, invoking the protection of the Russians of Transnistria, a secessionist territory of Moldova.
What is Canada doing in the meantime? He gives generously to Ukraine. He orders expensive, already outdated and poorly designed F-35s. Would it come to Justin Trudeau’s mind to really modernize the Canadian army? No. But we can surely count on him to provide Canadian soldiers with new uniforms. Why not uniforms in the colors of multiculturalism and woke diversity? What a fabulous army we would have!
