Willem II has made the relegation battle in the Eredivisie even more exciting. The Tilburgers defeated Vitesse 1-0 and therefore left last place.
Sparta Rotterdam, which successfully completed the remaining six minutes against Vitesse earlier this week, but lost to FC Twente on Friday, is now behind with 25 points. Willem II is equal in points (26) with PEC Zwolle and Fortuna Sittard, which will play against Go Ahead Eagles later today.
There was a lot at stake for the home team in Tilburg and that was noticeable before kick-off. Many Willem II fans accompanied the players bus on its way to the stadium to give the players a helping hand.
Goal Hornkamp
Apparently that helped, because Willem II shot out of the starting blocks. Jizz Hornkamp already had an imposed chance after four minutes and convincingly shot the ball past Vitesse goalkeeper Markus Schubert.
Vitesse then insisted, but the Arnhem team did not convince. The audience in the stadium only fell silent for a moment when Riechedly Bazoer hit the outside of the post.
Also in the second half, coach Thomas Letsch’s team barely managed to find a gap in Tilburg’s defense, despite a predominance. An equalizer might have been deserved, but the brave fighting Willem II held out and will meet PSV next week.
