Last month she did attend the memorial service for Philip at Westminster Abbey. She was accompanied there by Prince Andrew. This was seen as an expression of support for her son. Andrew has been discredited after an American woman accuses him of sexual abuse. Andrew denies those allegations, but he has settled with the woman and surrendered some of his titles to his mother.
Last week, Elizabeth received an early birthday visit from her grandson Harry and his wife Meghan. It was the first time since the two relinquished their roles within the royal family in 2020 and moved to California that they had contact with the queen again.
In a conversation with NBC News Harry said his grandmother is “in fine shape”. “It was nice to be with her and see her.” He did joke that Elizabeth is starting to find birthdays a bit boring at her age.
Later this year, the queen is still waiting for public appearances: she has been on the throne for exactly seventy years and the platinum jubilee will be celebrated for four days at the beginning of June with all kinds of festivities, simultaneously with her 96th birthday.
Barbie manufacturer Mattel is also trying to cash in on the royal birthday, with a special Queen doll being released in an ivory dress, royal blue sash and tiara to mark the occasion. Unlike previous Queen dolls, this one is also for sale, but it is going fast: the doll was no longer available in the Mattel webshop on Thursday morning.
