In October of last year, Iván Reyes Arzate, former commander of the defunct Federal Police and close to the former secretary of security, Genaro García Luna, expressed remorse before the highest court in New York, USA. Until then he went to plead guilty after being accused of trafficking, possessing and distributing cocaine to that country.
This man nicknamed The Queen read before Judge Brian Cogan a letter —in Spanish— in which he stated that between the months of September and November 2016, as a Mexican official, he handed over information in exchange for bribes to a criminal group to traffic drugs to the United States.
After his appearance, prosecutors considered that 10 years in prison would be a fair sentence for the former Mexican official. This Wednesday his sentencing hearing will take place, in which his future will be defined.
For this case, the US authorities have shown thousands of pages with transcripts of telephone recordings and messages, which incriminate Iván Reyes Arzate.

According to the government of Joe Biden, the head of the Sensitive Affairs Unit of the Federal Police collaborated with a hitherto little-known criminal organization called El Monitoring 39.
The DEA tells in detail how this cartel of cartels worked with multiple criminal groups: Sinaloa, Jalisco Nueva Generación, del Golfo and Los Zetas, and was protected by the Mexican authorities.
Follow-up 39 not only moved large quantities of its own cocaine and marijuana to the United States, but leaders of other cartels trusted it with the shipment of their drugs.
In 2016, during his position as commander of the UAS, Reyes Arzate learned of a DEA investigation against El Monitoring 39. Shortly after, the officer met with leaders of this cartel, shared information about the investigation and accepted a bribe from USD 290 thousand.
Reyes Arzate was subordinate to the former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico, Genaro García Luna, currently accused of protecting criminal groups such as the Beltrán Leyva and the Sinaloa Cartel.

In April 2017, the conversation between two drug traffickers captured by the DEA uncovered the illicit activities of Reyes Arzate, with the Beltrán Leyva criminal gang.
According to the Drug Enforcement Agency, Reyes charged the family organization in exchange for investigative information about them. One of them occurred in 2016, when information provided by Reyes to the Beltrán Lyevas led to the torture and murder of a confidential DEA source in Miami. Reyes was not only perfectly aware of this, but he was at the meeting where the murder was decided and, along with two other people, he charged USD 3,000,000 for this information.
