António Guterres asks China for “a credible visit” to his country.
The UN Secretary General, visiting Beijing for the Winter Olympics, has asked Chinese leaders that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, can make a visit that also includes a real vision of Xinjiang, where thousands of people from Muslim minorities are imprisoned in “re-education camps”.
Bachelet has been in negotiations since 2018 to be able to visit the area after the allegations of abuse of the Uyghur minority of various international organizations.
Some countries have called for a diplomatic boycott of these Games to protest against human rights violations in China.
In his meeting with President Xi Jinping and the foreign minister on Saturday, Guterres expressed his “appreciation for China’s strong support for the UN and multilateralism.”
