Alexander Lukashenko is ready to step down as president of Belarus, but only if the situation in the country stabilizes. This is the condition imposed by the president, which he made public during an interview.
When the Russian journalist, Vladimir Soloviev, asked him how many more years he would remain in power, Lukashenko confessed that he did not know.
“No. If there is a difficult situation around Belarus, if a war breaks out or there are events similar to those of 2020, I will always be there. But if the situation calms down, if the event arises, we will decide. Believe me, I am not president because I really want to be. God forbid you find yourself in a situation where you’re dependent on numerous circumstances. When you’re just bound by all those circumstances, by your country, which you’ve created with your own hands, and everything else “.
The events of 2020 to which Lukashenko refers were actually protests against his re-election after elections considered fraudulent by the international community. Back then Lukashenko, now 67, vowed never to resign.
