You don’t see it often in the Netherlands, children with and children without disabilities who go to school together. But it has been like this at IKC Oudkarspel primary school for a year now.
They have group 1 to group 8. But they have also added three extra classes for children with a severe intellectual disability.
It is much more difficult for children with a severe intellectual disability to understand things. Sometimes they can’t even talk or walk.
It is not compulsory for these children to go to school. That is why more than 10,000 children with disabilities in the Netherlands never go to school.
In the classroom at IKC Oudkarspel primary school, children with disabilities receive their own lessons, with the care and help they need. And sometimes, with gym for example, they can join in with the rest of the group.
The children in Oudkarspel really enjoy being with children with an intellectual disability.
I really like it because you really notice that you bond with them.

They are really just friends, only they need a little more attention.

That is why a group of people who stand up for children with disabilities says that it should be the same in many more schools.
Children with disabilities should also be able to play and learn together with other children, the group says.
In fact, every child prefers to go to school to play with friends. But children with disabilities are not always allowed to. We want to see that it is possible.

There are now 44 schools in the Netherlands where children with and without disabilities are taught together. And the group of people who stand up for children with disabilities wants every municipality to have a primary school that also has room for children with disabilities.
