The United States government recommended that its citizens avoid a hospital located in Los Cabos after years of complaints that said medical center takes advantage of Americans, overcharging them, intimidating them and refusing to give up their medical records.
Every month, more than 100,000 American tourists arrive in Los Cabos, Baja California, attracted by its beaches and its spectacular desert landscape. But it seems, They are not only a source of income for hotels and restaurants in the twin cities of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, but also for a health center that has already racked up several complaints.
United States citizens have filed multiple complaints alleging that the hospital demanded tens of thousands of dollars in advance payments, threatened patients’ relatives, and refused to release clinical records about the care he had actually provided. This prompted the US consulate in Tijuana to issue a rare “health alert” on Wednesday about business practices there.
“U.S. citizens have reported instances of withholding medical care until payment is received, failing to provide itemized billing lists, ordering unnecessary procedures, withholding U.S. passports, obstructing medical travel, and refusing to to discharge patients until they pay,” the consulate said in the alert.
The consulate urged US citizens to go to other hospitals listed on their website.
There is some evidence that this hospital pays or otherwise compensates ambulances and hotels to send American patients there.
The consulate wrote: “Please be aware that hotels and resorts in the Los Cabos area may have contracts or informal relationships with the hospital,” the statement read.
