Popular mobilization has not weakened since the October 25 coup despite murderous repression and new raids. Three demonstrators were killed in Sudan on Monday, January 24, during new rallies against the putsch and military power. In Khartoum, the capital, a demonstrator was killed by a “live ammunition to the chest”, another by “a bullet to the head” and a third was killed after being hit by a “bullet in the head” in Wad Madani, 200 kilometers further south, according to the Central Committee of Doctors, close to the dispute.

In the capital, the demonstrators tried again, under the fire of tear gas canisters from the security forces, to converge on the presidential palace where the head of the army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhane, sits. Several demonstrators were seen breathing heavily from tear gas used by security forces to disperse them. Others were bleeding after being hit by tear gas canisters, according to the AFP correspondent. The Central Committee of Doctors, underlined an “excessive use of violence” by the security forces.

The demonstrators are demanding civilian power in a country almost always under the rule of the army since its independence 66 years ago. They also denounce the repression which has killed 75 demonstrators since Abdel Fattah al-Burhane’s coup. On the other side, a senior officer was stabbed to death on January 13 by protesters in Khartoum, according to police.
