The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), Rosa Icela Rodríguez, assured that Mexico has had a year-on-year reduction of 3.6% in intentional homicides, since in all of 2021 there were 33,308 crimes of this type, compared to 34 thousand 554 of 2020.
“In relation to intentional homicide there is a downward trend, especially with the beginning of strengthening in several states of the country,” said the official.
However, during December there were 2,606 homicides, a figure similar to the 2,633 in the same month of 2020. In addition, compared to December 2018, when the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) began, this crime has accumulated a drop of four percentage points, reported Rodríguez in the “morning” today, Thursday.
As in other periods, only 6 of the 32 territorial entities concentrate 50% of intentional homicides: Guanajuato, Baja California, Michoacán, State of Mexico, Chihuahua and Jalisco.
“(This occurs) as a result of the strengthening of the security strategy, on July 20 there has been a downward trend in intentional homicide,” he reiterated.
Meanwhile, the SSPC affirmed that femicides in December, murders typified by sexist or gender violence, had a year-on-year decrease of 7% compared to the same month in 2020, although it did not specify the figures.

OTHER CRIMES
Rodríguez presumed that in the criminal incidence of crimes under federal jurisdiction, there has been a decrease of 32.3% compared to December 2018, when more than 9,062 crimes were committed, while in December 2021, 6,135 were recorded.
Likewise, it stated that the crime of kidnapping decreased by 22.3% compared to 2020 and 50% compared to 2019. In addition, it had a drop of 71.8% in December 2021 compared to January 2019, when a historical maximum of 185 victims was registered.
From January to December 2021, there are year-on-year drops of 13.3% in organized crime crimes and 11.1% in crimes against health, that is, those related to drugs.
Despite these numbers, the SSPC reported year-on-year increases in 2021 of 9.3% in robbery from pedestrians and 12.6% in robbery in public and individual transport.
The most violent month in 2021 was May, with 2,997 murders, while March 2020 was the month with the most homicides under the current Administration, which began in December 2018, with 3,041.
Mexico has recorded the two most violent years in its history in the first two years of AMLO’s term, with 34,690 murder victims in 2019 and 34,554 in 2020.
