The federal government published the decree granting administrative facilities and incentives for the regularization of used vehicles of foreign origin, known as “chocolate cars”, that are in the states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Sonora and Tamaulipas, and do not have the document that proves their legal stay in the country.
The decree, published this Wednesday in the evening edition of the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) states that used vehicles whose Vehicle Identification Number corresponds to the vehicle’s manufacturing or assembly in Mexico, the United States of America or Canada, may be definitively imported without requiring a certificate of origin, prior permission from the Ministry of Economy, or registration in the Register of Importers.
This, as long as the vehicle has been found as of October 19, 2021 in the territory of the 10 entities of the Republic mentioned and do not have the document that proves their legal stay in the country, the model of the vehicle is eight or more years prior to the one in which the final importation takes place; the owner who carries out the importation is a natural person, of legal age and resident in one of those states and a use of two thousand 500 pesos is covered.
What’s more, Only one vehicle per person was limited and used vehicles that, due to their characteristics or technical aspects, are restricted or prohibited from circulating in the country of origin or in Mexico, may not be definitively imported into the national territory.
