TSMC is reportedly raising prices for silicon, meaning the prices of CPUs and GPUs will go up this year.
DigiTimes reports that the Taiwanese semiconductor maker has informed its largest customers that prices could rise by up to 20%. Ultimately, this will also affect the customers with a possible price increase.
Besides the current shortage of chips, which is expected to last until next year, TSMC also has other reasons for increasing the prices of chips. This involves higher costs for material, freight and logistics. AMD, in particular, would suffer from higher prices for manufacturing CPUs and GPUs. DigiTimes reports that Nvidia made a prepayment for the purchase of silicon some time ago.
The news comes at an interesting time for the GPU market as both AMD and Nvidia announced new graphics cards this month, including the RTX 3090 Ti, which was announced at CES 2022.
