Mexico City reported an average of seven thousand infections per day from COVID-19 during the last week due to the fourth wave of this disease that the country is experiencing, the capital authorities reported this Friday.
The Mexican capital reached levels of contagion higher than those of the third wave, which reached its peak between July and August 2021, but despite the escalation in recent weeks there have been no extraordinary measures or business closures.
“It is remarkable the increase with greater speed with respect to the third wave”Eduardo Clark, general director of Digital Government of the Digital Agency for Public Innovation of Mexico City, said at a press conference.
He explained that currently in Mexico City there are 1,239 people hospitalized, of which only 208 require ventilator care.
However, Clark noted, “Most of those admitted are people who did not complete their scheme or were not vaccinated”.
Of the total number of those admitted to hospitals of the Government of Mexico City, 84% did not receive any dose of the anticovid vaccine or did not complete their vaccination schedule.
“This speaks of the importance of vaccination. We estimate that about 4% of people in the city do not have their complete scheme and that translates into an almost 25 times greater risk of being hospitalized in case of getting infected with COVID-19“Shared Clark, who also encouraged citizens to come get their doses.
To summarize, he acknowledged that the data for this last week reflects numbers “important” of increase in cases that position the capital above the moments of greatest contagion of past waves, but fortunately hospitalizations are at very different levels.
Hospitalizations are currently 14% lower than they were at the peak of the third wave, in the summer of 2021.
This week the city will continue at the green epidemiological traffic light (low risk), a national classification that is announced every two weeks and that may vary next Friday for the capital.
Regarding this, Clark said that the Government of Mexico is working on the necessary modifications to obtain the score for the different levels of epidemiological risk, since the circumstances have changed and the relationship between infections and hospitalizations is very different from that of a few months ago. .
In recent weeks, Mexico has registered a huge uptick in daily positives, with a historical record on January 12 of more than 44 thousand new cases.
The country adds 4.25 million infections and 300 thousand 912 deaths, being the fifth country in the world for absolute numbers of deaths from COVID-19.
