The British Prime Minister has been facing, since Monday, January 10, new embarrassing revelations fueling accusations of violation of health rules against Covid-19. Boris Johnson is suspected of having participated in a party in Downing Street, with his wife Carrie, on May 20, 2020. The United Kingdom was then living its first confinement, to try to stem the first deadly wave of the epidemic.
According to the ITV News channel Boris Johnson’s chief private secretary emailed around 100 people on that date, inviting them “after an incredibly busy period” to “enjoy the good weather” at a drink ” with social distancing “in Downing Street Gardens. “Join us from 6pm and bring your own drinks,” the post concluded. Asked (before this publication) about his presence at the event, Boris Johnson had contented himself with an embarrassed smile to refer to the ongoing investigation.
An internal investigation was indeed launched in December, after accusations about the organization of parties despite health restrictions. That same month, an adviser to Boris Johnson resigned after the publication of a video in which she appeared joking about a Christmas party that allegedly took place in December 2020 in Downing Street. The Guardian had also published a photo showing the head of government and collaborators with cheese and glasses of wine in the garden of his residence. Boris Johnson’s services replied that it was a working meeting.
