In 2021, the sale of new cars was one million 14 thousand 680 units, a figure 6.8% higher than that of 2020, but lower than in 2008 when the world financial crisis occurred, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
In December 2021, 97 thousand 365 new vehicles were marketed, 7.8% less than in December 2020.
The automaker with the highest sales volume in the Mexican market: Nissan closed the year with an increase of 5%, selling 203,918 vehicles.
Volkswagen closed 2021 with a slight 1.3% drop in sales, placing 98,436 units.
And General Motors registered a fall of 15%, with 127 thousand 300 units sold, being one of the automotive companies most affected by the lack of semiconductors in the country.
Among luxury brands, BMW was the automaker with the highest sales volume in the Mexican market with 16,912 units, an increase of 12% compared to 2020.
Mercedes Benz sold 13,751 new vehicles, 7% less than in 2020; and Audi placed 9,416 units, 4.3% less than the previous year.
For its part, Toyota managed to close 2021 with a 19% increase in sales, placing 91,090 units; KIA increased its sales by 11%, with the sale of 82,040 units; while Stellantis increased its sales by 12%, placing 65,909 new units.
Chinese brands surprise
The Chinese brand JAC closed last year with the sale of 8,203 new vehicles, 92% more than in 2020.
Motornation, marketers of the BAIC, Changan and JMC brands, sold 2,032 vehicles, 31% more than in 2020.
And MG Motor sold 16,358 units, 2,1203% more than in 2020.
On the contrary, Honda closed last year with an 11% decrease in sales; Infiniti 17%; Acura 4%; and Seat 1.3% less.
