Mexico will have gubernatorial elections in 2022 in six states, including the important tourist center of Quintana Roo, while the opposition presents friction in itself and the doubt remains whether the ruling party and leftist National Regeneration Movement (Morena) will win even more. weight at the regional level.
Mexicans will return to the polls a year after experiencing the largest election in the country’s history, where the Chamber of Deputies was renewed and 15 governors, 30 local congresses were elected and the mayors of almost 2,000 municipalities were renewed.
Of the regions in dispute in 2022, among which are Hidalgo, Durango, Tamaulipas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo and Aguascalientes, the ruling party is the favorite in each of them with the exception of the last one, a conservative fiefdom in the hands of the right-wing Party. National Action (PAN).
It should be noted that currently the Government coalition has control in 17 of the 32 states of the country, in addition to the headquarters of Mexico City led by Claudia Sheinbaum. The capital, however, suffered a severe setback in the June elections, when it saw that half of the territory was left in the hands of the opposition.

On the next day, Tamaulipas, a strategic point in the land crossing of merchandise between the United States and Mexico, and the Caribbean Quintana Roo, one of the country’s greatest tourist attractions, which in recent months has been the headquarters of violent episodes.
Unlike past elections, where Morena maintained a narrow parliamentary majority, thanks to his coalition with the Green Ecologist of Mexico (PVEM) and Labor (PT) parties, and confirmed his territorial muscle by winning in 11 states, this election counts with fewer media outlets. However, Khemvirg Puente, political scientist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), warns that the day of June 5 could elevate the party of President López Obrador and turn it into the formation with the greatest territorial force, something that would give it a advantage for the presidential elections of 2024.
“Morena can consolidate its dominance, because it is expected that it will win again, and this could lay the foundations of a hegemonic party,” Puente concluded in an interview with Efe.
The decision of the ruling party has been to nominate veteran politicians of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) who have joined the ranks of Moreno in recent years. This happened in Hidalgo with Julio Menchaca, in Durango with Marina Vitela and Tamaulipas with Américo Villareal.

The selection of candidates will end in the courts after two losing hopefuls, in Oaxaca and Durango, announced challenges, although in the Tamaulipas case the magistrates have already ruled in favor of the party.
UNITY IN THE OPPOSITION
This year’s political battle will also test the cohesion of the opposition alliance “Va por México”, made up of the PAN, PRI and the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD). This alliance obtained small victories during 2021, such as preventing the two-thirds majority of the ruling party in parliament, necessary to approve constitutional reforms, and winning half of the mayoralties of Mexico City.
José Antonio Crespo, a political analyst and research professor at the Center for Economic Research and Teaching (CIDE), believes that the challenge for the dissent will be to prevent Morena from winning in most of the six states.
“If it goes in coalition, as in 2021, the opposition can avoid an overwhelming triumph of the Government, if they do not go together it will be a piece of cake for Morena,” said the academic. So far, the opposition has confirmed that it will participate with a unitary candidacy in Tamaulipas, Durango, Aguascalientes and Hidalgo, the latter ruled by the PRI for almost a century. In the last of these four states, a new friction has been staged within the opposition tripartite.
On December 30, the PRI governor of Hidalgo, Omar Fayad, complained bitterly on his social networks about the president of his own formation, Alejandro Moreno, whom he accused of handing over the state’s candidacy to the PAN.
“This is another of the many grievances that in the dark they have been doing to the militancy,” attacked Fayad. Moreno replied that “there are no spaces to impose candidates destined for defeat.” The reality is that the opposition has not disclosed its standard-bearer in that region, but it has not ruled out that the person chosen is not affiliated with the PRI.
TEST BEFORE 2024
The contest in 2022 will be a first test facing the presidential succession that will take place in two years. In 2023 the parties will have one last clash between Coahuila and the State of Mexico, the last two granaries of votes for the PRI, in case Morena wins Hidalgo.
“What happens in the states is not necessarily reflected in the general ones, with the State of Mexico it happens the same, many times it is said that it is a rehearsal and that is not always the case. The PRI won in 2017 and was third in the presidential race a year later, ”warned Crespo.
