An unusual and dangerous event occurred in recent days in the municipality of Floridablanca, Santander, when the authorities discovered that the parents of an 11-year-old boy decided not to go to the hospital due to the burns that the minor suffered on December 31, due to gunpowder handling.
According to national media, the boy’s injuries occurred in one of his eyes and it was not until the residents of the El Reposo neighborhood alerted the authorities that they were able to learn of the fact.
“A call is received to the 123 line, where a minor who had been burned with gunpowder on December 31 is informed. For this reason, the patrols travel and when they arrive, they are cared for by the children’s mother and stepfather. They say that they only live with three minors and they are verified but none registered injuries, ”Lieutenant Juan Gómez, the operational commander of Mebuc, said on RCN Radio.
Even so, the same media reported that after this first investigation, the authorities received another anonymous call that let them know that there was indeed another minor in the house, where they had to go again, since the informant warned about the seriousness of the injuries .
“Childhood and adolescent personnel come to this house again and meet with the mother, who agrees to take the child out. We realize that he had a wound on his face, over his left eye, “added the official on the national station.
It was then that the minor could finally be transferred to the Santander University Hospital, where he receives the necessary medical attention.
According to what was reported by the authorities, the parents stated that they hid it for fear of the penalties that would result from the accident being discovered. It should be said that the prohibition of the use of gunpowder is in force in Santander, as well as in most of the main cities of the country.
“We call to avoid the use of gunpowder to prevent injuries to children and adults. We must have responsible behaviors and not promote these events, “added the uniformed man.
But the use of gunpowder would not be the only reason for which the parents could be punished, but also, for having denied medical attention to their child; This was indicated by the person from Floridablanca, María Margarita Serrano on Blu Radio:
“The lack of assistance is a serious fact and everything that is surrounding this event may have legal consequences both in the Prosecutor’s Office and in the rights of the minor’s parents, they could, after a process at the Family police station, that the child or if they have more children they cannot continue in their custody ”.
It should be said that, according to the statements that the boy’s father offered in Noticias Caracol, both he and the mother did not provide the child with gunpowder and likewise, he was emphatic in assuring that they did not go to the doctor because they believed that they would not be treated for be Venezuelans:
“We did not give the child the gunpowder, but we were still afraid, one here goes to the doctor, because one of my youngest children recently had to take him to the doctor and one of them is not cared for because he is Venezuelan. They ask that the EPS, that’s why we don’t go to the doctor ”.
Likewise, it specified that when he arrived at the home, the child already had the injuries:
“When I got home from work the boy was already burned, supposedly it was the children next door who were playing with gunpowder and threw a match and he went to grab it because the match did not explode and when he approached it it exploded, that was what they told me ”.
According to information from the news, the child will be discharged in the next few hours.
