The rector of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), Ricardo Villanueva, offered an apology to all university women who have suffered harassment, violence and discrimination throughout the history of UdeG, and announced that Professor José de Jesús Covarrubias was dismissed from the university house for the acts of harassment of a minor and that from there other cases arose within the institution.
“We moved him away from the classrooms, the entire work procedure has already been done, so that teacher no longer has a job”
Villanueva pointed out that the process that began against Covarrubias is administrative. “And indeed this controversial case of this professor from the Legal Studies Division who also holds the position of magistrate was definitively removed from the position of the University of Guadalajara, we had put precautionary measures from the first day, we removed him from the classrooms, He did all the work procedures, so that teacher is no longer in work ”, he commented.
In addition, the rector pointed out that although Covarrubias could file some legal resources for his reinstatement, likewise, the UdeG will try to prevent him from returning to the university.
“If there is a risk (that he can recover his position through measures), according to the Law he has possibilities of resources in his defense and he will know if he wants to use them or not, the University will fight all the resources that he can present, at the beginning it was the separation labor, has an administrative procedure within the commissions of responsibilities within the University, we will be waiting, if it had not been discussed it was to let the whole procedure flow according to law, the professor had all his right to a defense hearing, and was a procedure that was meticulously taken care of just so that a future front would not open that could return him. It is a definitive termination, the professor will receive at the end of the year his proportional part of the bonus that corresponds to him and it will be his last relationship with the University ”, he said.
Villanueva announced that will issue a statement shortly offering public apologies by the University for abuses, harassment and others that play against the human rights of women.
“Today I will try to write a text to make public from all women in general, especially university women, an apology from the institution has been demanded of us, and I think all women deserve it, I must admit I have done it, these 230 years of this institution there has been harassment in classrooms of all kinds there has been violence, universities have the opportunity to be factors of change, not only in the interior, but elsewhere, there is harassment in companies In governments, in general in society, we have to be a factor of change, also towards the outside. We have not done enough for women to live free of violence, we are working on it, “he said.
