The United Kingdom will not send its political representatives to the winter Olympics in Beijing, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday, joining the diplomatic boycott advocated by the United States alleging human rights violations by China.
“As I have said before, we do not support sports boycotts, but there are no plans for … ministers to attend the Winter Olympics.”he said in Parliament, stressing that “there will be a diplomatic boycott” which Australia also joined on Wednesday.
In neither case does the diplomatic boycott affect sports contests or prevent British, American or Australian athletes from participating.
“Nobody cares if they come or not” the political representativessaid a spokesman for Chinese diplomacy, Wang Wenbin, reacting to the Canberra announcement on Wednesday. “His political maneuvers and his little tricks will not change anything to the success of the Olympic Games,” he added.
When is the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics?
Beijing will become in 2022 the first city in the world to have hosted the Summer (2008) and Winter Olympics, which will take place from Friday 4 to Sunday 20 February.
