Baghdad | Four Kurdish fighters were killed and five wounded in an attack blamed on the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) in northern Iraq, the third such attack in less than two weeks, a security source announced on Monday.
The attack late Sunday evening left “dead and wounded” in the ranks of the peshmerga, the armed forces of Iraqi Kurdistan, these forces reported in a statement, without providing a precise assessment but accusing “the terrorists of Daesh”, acronym in Arabic for ISIS.
The attack left “four dead, including an officer in the rank of captain and five injured,” according to a security source speaking on condition of anonymity. The jihadists targeted a Peshmerga outpost near the village of Qara Salem, north of Kirkuk.
At the end of November, five peshmerga were killed in a bomb attack claimed by ISIS. On Thursday, the jihadists again claimed responsibility for an attack south of Erbil that killed three civilians and nine Peshmerga fighters.
In the aftermath of this attack, a meeting of the Peshmerga and Baghdad security forces took place. The participants had agreed on “coordination on the ground”, with air strikes carried out by the federal army.
After a meteoric rise in power in 2014 in Iraq and neighboring Syria and the conquest of vast territories, IS has seen its self-proclaimed “caliphate” falter under the impact of successive offensives in these two countries.
Iraq declared victory against the IS jihadists at the end of 2017. But the latter continue to carry out ad hoc attacks against villagers and security forces in the north of the country.
Today, the jihadist organization “maintains a largely clandestine presence in Iraq and Syria and leads a sustained insurgency on either side of the border between the two countries”, according to a UN report published in early 2021.
In these two countries, the jihadist organization would retain “in all 10,000 active combatants”, according to this report.
The last major attack claimed by ISIS in Iraq in July targeted a market in the Shiite district of Sadr City in Baghdad and killed around 30 people.
