The rector of the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), Ricardo Villanueva Lomelí, proposed a popular initiative so that the budget assigned to the house of studies is constitutionally autonomous.
During a demonstration that took place yesterday in Plaza Liberación, in the Center of Guadalajara, Villanueva Lomelí commented that if local legislators decide not to grant more resources to the educational institution in 2022, starting today there will be a call to gather signatures and Obtain a fair annual bag that allows to increase the spaces for the Entity’s students.
“(We will do it) so as not to depend on the ups and downs of these governors who do not understand anything, who do not know the value of education; or of these deputies who are willing to negotiate works for their municipalities in exchange for not supporting the University. You should know: the Executive has been willing that its negotiation with other banks is to give them whatever in exchange for not giving anything to the UdeG, “he said in front of the crowd that filled the square.
“What good is it that they discuss (the budget) if tomorrow the governor changes a game like he did to us? If Congress cannot defend itself against that, there is no division of powers, therefore UdeG must prepare, “he added.
On November 16, the rector of the UdeG called on the governor of Jalisco to show more solidarity with the university community and to allocate more resources beyond the 48% established in the agreement with the federal government.
He explained that during the government of Ramírez Acuña, university spending grew 10.43%; with Emilio González it went to 19.21% and with Aristóteles Sandoval it reached 8.47 percent. He assured that in the current administration it has been 5.78 percent.
The appointment to demonstrate in front of the Jalisco Congress and ask for a fair budget was at 11 in the morning, but beforehand contingents of high schools, university centers, Civil Hospitals and unions from the University of Guadalajara began to arrive at the Liberation Square, where A stage was already waiting for them … and a Congress and the Government Palace surrounded by fences.
The rector general, Ricardo Villanueva, and other university authorities took the stage shouting “University!” and “UdeG, UdeG!” of the nonconformists who demanded a fair budget, such as the one requested by the governor from the Federation.
The first to speak to the crowd, who carried signs, flags and banners, was Juan Salvador Díaz, a father of a family of students from one of the Wixaritari communities where the UdeG has headquarters, who recalled that with the institution, young people from the towns can study their baccalaureate and even sleep and eat on campus.
He was followed by the leaders of the University Workers’ Unions, who called the governor and the deputies treacherous.
But the crowd was moved when Civil Hospital workers recalled that they put their lives at risk to help the population when some do not even have a base or fair wages.
The peak moment came when the rector gave his speech and, between shouts of “you are not alone!” noted that the low budget for the university is a tantrum, whim and outrage of “a governor who confuses authority with virility.”
While the president of the Federation of University Students (FEU), Javier Armenta, said that the students would remain camping in the square until the authorities meet the resource requirements.
The UdeG had more than 20 thousand attendees, 7 thousand State Civil Protection and 10 thousand municipal Civil Protection.
“It is in general a position of all executives, national and state, to get more involved in looking at the finances of state universities and an effort is seen to make changes in the way the universities are conducted, but they are being affected. in different ways”.
