On a very frustrating day for Chilean activists, this Tuesday the parliament of Chile postponed the vote on a long-awaited bill to legalize same-sex marriage and filed another for decriminalize abortion.
Outside the Senate, community organizations LGBTI were prepared to celebrate, but after the project was reviewed by the Constitution Commission of the Upper House, was sent to a mixed commission of senators and deputies. It will be then until next week that the Congress finally decide on the legalization of same-sex marriage.
Javiera Zúñiga, spokesperson for Movilh Chile:
“We are frankly disappointed in what happened today in the constitution committee in the Senate, since we hoped that the bill that was dispatched from the lower house could go directly to the floor without observations, however, it was decided to pass it to a mixed committee , which is a delay of at least 2-3 weeks. “
Frustration for Chilean feminists
At the same time, the Chilean Chamber of Deputies, with 65 votes against, 62 in favor and one abstention, rejected the bill that decriminalizes abortion up to 14 weeks of pregnancy and will archive the initiative for one year. Although the same chamber seemed to have approved the project the September 28, the decision to reject it after analyzing the particular regulations of the text files the standard and does not allow a new process before one year.
Vlado Mirosevic, pro-abortion deputy:
“Let it be a decision of the women, that they decide because they are in that circumstance, not us. Not the deputies and even less the men. We vote in favor with conviction due to respect for individual freedom and women’s rights”
These projects fully affect the campaign for the second round of the presidential election next Decembre 19th, in which the conservative will face Jose Antonio Kast and the leftist Gabriel Boric.
