FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts, USA (AP) – Sean Johnson blocked Adam Buksa’s shot during the penalty shoot-out and Johnson’s five teammates sent the ball into the back of the net Tuesday for New York City FC to advance to his first Eastern Conference final after a 2-2 draw against the New England Revolution.
Alexander Callens scored the last penalty for NYC, which will face the Philadelphia Union on Sunday for a spot in the MLS Cup.
Alfredo Morales, Thiago Andrade, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi, Maximiliano Moralez and Callens all converted from 11 steps against Matt Turner, MLS goalkeeper of the year.
Each team scored in the first 10 minutes of the match, but the score remained the same until overtime.
Valentine Castellanos, the Golden Boot winner, gave NYC a 2-1 lead in the 109th minute with a header from Gudmundur Thórarinsson, and Tajon Buchanan tied the game nine minutes later.
